This stunning DB3S recreation was completed by Bill Monk (W.A.M.) in 2015. It has covered approximately 2 731 miles since it. was ready for the road and is the last of only 11 of these wonderful celebrations of the DB3S by Bill Monk and the only one tot recreate the style of the later DB3S works cars. Powered by a 3.5 liter straight six BMW engine, with triple Weber 40 DCOE twin-choke, side -draught carburetors it had been fully set up on rolling road by Janspeed of Salisbury recording a very healthy 182bhp. Bill Monk previously owned two original Astin Martin DB3S chassis numb er 10, an ex- Le Mans car and chassis number 120, one of only 3 DB3S coupés ever build. Inspired by his ownership of these legendary motor cars, Bill decided to produce DB3S recreations under the name WAM ( William Anthony Monk) using a mould taken from one of the original cars and his extensive experience of restoring and working on Aston Martins.
Finished in Aston Martin Racing Green with knock-off wire wheels, chrome spinners and polished stainless steel side exhaust pipes, this DB3S recreation sounds as good as it looks, with equally impressive performance. The BMW 5-Series engine was specifically chosen, as opposed to a Jaguar Straight-six engine, as the BMW unit provides very similar power to the original DB3S engine, sounds very similar and the exhaust exits on the correct side, unlike the straight-six Jaguar engine. This includes the front suspension( double wishbones and uprights with aftermarket cool spring damper units), the rear suspension ( Jaguar lower wishbones, driveshafts and uprights) and with Jaguar servo-assisted disc brakes fitted al all corners. Exceptional attention to detail has been given to the interior, including a period correct style dashboard and steering wheel, along with period style seats in green leather and matching green carpet.
Prior to our vendors ownership this car was test driven by a pervious owner of the original DB3S chassis number 11. Who was incredibly impressed by Bill Monk's work. Totally practical, with half and full tonneau covers and a spare wheel, this superb recreation will offer its new owner the chance to enjoy and experience the sight and sounds of the legendary DB3S for a fraction of the cost of the genuine article.
The Aston Martin DB3S is a sports race car that was built by Aston Martin. Following the failure of the heavy and uncompetitive Aston Martin DB3 designed by Eberan Eberhorst; William Watson, employed as Eberhorst's assistant, presented an alternative design to John Wyer, Aston Martin's competitions manager, whose assistance was needed as Eberhorst could well oppose being up-staged. In total 31 cars were made, with 11 works cars and 20 cars being sold for customer use.
The DB3S was introduced in 1953 and it proved significantly more successful than the Aston Martin DB3. Although the DB3S failed at Le Mans they went on to score a 1-2 at the Tourist Trophy at Dundrod in the 6th round of the inaugural World Sports Car Championship to help Astons to 3rd in the championship. As well there was a win in the non championship Goodwood 9 Hours.
1954 was a less successful season with a third place in the Buenos Aires 1000 km being the high point. However the cars failed at the Sebring 12 hours, the Mille Miglia, Le Mans and the Tourist Trophy.
1955 saw a return to form. Astons missed the opening two rounds at Buenos Aires and Sebring and the sole DB3S failed to finish at the Mille Miglia but Collins/Frere finished 2nd at Le Mans and Walker/Poore scored a 4th at the Tourist Trophy behind the dominant 1, 2, 3 of the Mercedes 300SLR to finish 5th in the championship. There was also time for another win in the non championship Goodwood 9 Hours.
By 1956 the design was starting to show its age and Astons were putting their resources into the development of the new DBR1 but the DB3S still finished 4th at Sebring and 5th at the Nurburging 1000Km to finish 4th in the championship together with another second at Le Mans in the hands of Moss/Collins although due to the change of regulations following the 1955 disaster this latter event was a non championship race.
The DBR1 now took over as Astons main sports racer but there was one last swan song for the DB3S in the hands of the Whitehead brothers at Le Mans in 1958 with a second place after all the works DBR1s failed to finish.
